But do I really need dog liability insurance?
If you live in one of the following states, dog liability insurance is legally required as soon as your dog is between 3-6 months old:
- Berlin, Hamburg, Niedersachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein, Thüringen
In most other states, dog liability is only required for certain dog breeds, but still highly recommended. The breed lists vary, so check with your local authorities to find out if your dog is on the list.
Only Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has no insurance requirements for dogs.

How dog liability

Insured up to €50 million
Even the best dog can cause big damage in a very small amount of time.
Example: A squirrel suddenly darts in front of you in the park. Your dog runs after it and into the cycle path. The approaching cyclist swerves to avoid your dog and falls. Getsafe covers all the costs associated with the accident, including material costs for the bicycle, compensation for personal injury and compensation for lost wages if the cyclist is unable to work due to injury.
Worldwide coverage
Your dog liability insurance covers you at home and abroad. You’re covered at the Hundeschule down the road, for an unlimited amount of time anywhere in the EU and for up to 5 years outside of the EU (as long as you have a registered German address).
Example: You’re on a well-deserved holiday with your best buddy. After a day spent tramping through the countryside, you both fall into a happy slumber in your holiday home. But you awake the next morning to discover that your dog has been up all night totally destroying the sofa. Thankfully, your insurance covers the damage.
Insure any dog breed
Not all insurers cover all dog breeds (so-called ‘Listenhunde’), but Getsafe does.
Example: You’re visiting your friend in her new flat, and your dog loves the place so much he pees directly on the rug. It doesn’t matter if your four-legged friend is a dachshund or a pit bull – we’ll cover the cleaning costs.

Emergency dog support
Dog liability insurance covers stuff your dog does. This add-on covers some additional (somewhat common!) things that can happen to your dog through no fault of its own:
- Veterinary expenses if your dog is injured by someone else’s dog whose owner can’t be identified, can’t pay the damages or doesn’t have insurance coverage
- Search, rescue and recovery costs (e.g. your dog climbs up a steep slope while hiking and can’t get down, and you can’t help him down on your own).
- Accommodation costs in a kennel if you end up admitted to the hospital or a rehab facility
Coverage ALWAYS costs only €1 extra per month, regardless of dog breed.
Coverage ALWAYS covers up to €3,000 for each of these three events.
